The Fertility Diet – There has been a lot of discussion over the last few years about the so-called “Fertility Diet.” This diet is being touted as the key to improving fertility in both men and women. Is this diet really the miracle diet that it’s been made out to be? Should you give up your hard-earned diet to increase fertility? Here’s what we’ve found out.
The Fertility Diet by Dr. Helen blitz is nothing more than a general dietary guide. She divides her book into five food groups that are designed to provide certain nutrition to the body to help enhance fertility. These groups are Fruits and Vegetables, Low-fat dairy products, Low-fat meat and poultry, Lean meats and Fish, and Oils and Spreads. The entire diet is designed around these general food groups.
How Does The Fertility Diet Work?
While the Fertility Diet does contain a few interesting food items, the bulk of the content consists of advice on which foods you should avoid while trying to become pregnant. The most comprehensive review of The Fertility Diet to date, however, looking at fertility diet and pregnancy, is that of the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study, which followed over 18,500 women in a long-term study looking at the relationship of diet, weight, exercise, and depression.
While there was an overall significant correlation between all three categories, the link between depression and weight was insignificant. When it came to exercise, there was a significant positive association between it and weight loss. And, for women underweight, depression was a significantly greater risk factor for becoming pregnant than for those who were overweight. The study was small, but still provides important information on the effect that diet can have on fertility.
The Fertility Diet also suggests that you take vitamin supplements. While vitamins are beneficial to all people, they seem to have a greater impact on women during their reproductive years. While the Fertility Diet does not go into detail about the exact vitamins to take, it does mention that you want to take a multi-vitamin that includes niacin, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
These vitamins are especially important for women trying to conceive as they help improve cervical mucus and sperm quality and sperm motility. You should also be sure to get enough daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are proving to have certain nutrients and vitamins that will help you conceive.
Finally, the Fertility Diet suggests that you do not smoke. Smoking is one of the largest preventable causes of infertility and is a common cause of low conception. The Fertility Diet recommends that you quit smoking while trying to get pregnant as the harmful effects are irreversible.
The diet also recommends that you do not drink alcohol. While you may notice that the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal are similar to those of pregnancy nausea, quitting alcohol will be good for your overall health as well as your chances of conceiving.
The Fertility Diet is one of the most effective ways to treat infertility and will get rid of many of the problems associated with infertility in just a few weeks time. For this reason, many people who suffer from infertility choose to use the fertility diet as their means of treating their condition.
Of course, you will need to make sure that you follow all of the guidelines that the fertility diet has set forth for you. While the Fertility Diet can work, it is not for everyone and is best used as a complementary therapy to other forms of treatment such as natural remedies, acupuncture, or surgery. When used as is, The Fertility Diet may prove to be very beneficial to infertility patients.
